Myths and Truth about Meth

Many times the advice and good intentions of friends and neighbors can be incorrect or even damaging. Let’s discuss some of the Myths surrounding homes contaminated with Methamphetamine.
1Myth – All homes contaminated with Methamphetamine are contaminated because there was a meth lab in the home.
Truth – Probably less than 5% of the homes which test positive for meth have had a meth lab in them. Many of the “precursors” or ingredients used to make Methamphetamine are now hard to get or have been restricted just to make it harder to manufacture meth in an illegal lab. Most of the contamination that is found in homes is from individuals “smoking” meth that comes from the super labs in California and Mexico.
2Myth – If there is meth in the home, all the walls and everything must be torn out to remove the meth.
Truth – Methamphetamine is water soluable. This means that it can be removed by cleaning. Only the non- cleanable porous items must be removed from the home such as carpet and pad, draperies and upholstered furniture. Items such as clothing can be laundered to remove any contamination.
3Myth – Meth was only “smoked” in one room or one part of the home. You can clean just these areas and remove it all.
Truth – When Meth is heated, it becomes a vapor and is moved throughout the home by the heating system. If Meth was smoked in one room, it has most likely been spread throughout the entire home.
4Myth – Since Meth Contamination is cleanable by water, the home owner can easily decontaminate the property.
Truth – While a home can be decontaminated by the owner of the home, there are certain safety concerns in “doing it yourself” that most home owners will not be able to meet without training and experience. It is also difficult and expensive to meet the level of cleaning needed to remove the Methamphetamine to safe levels. Many owners of properties trying to decontaminate on their own have a difficult time removing the contaminates and find themselves with the expense of testing multiple times before a clearance test can be passed.
5Myth – Once a Meth house, always a Meth house.
Truth – Once the home is decontaminated, it stays decontaminated unless someone smokes meth in the home again. It does not soak into the walls and then “seep back out” over time. Once the Meth is removed, it’s gone.

What Happens When a Home is Decontaminated?

Once a home has been tested and found to be contaminated, the home is closed to entry by the local health department.
Once it is closed, the health department will require that a Work Plan be submitted by the owner of the property or by a Decontamination Specialist and a permit to decontaminate the property be purchased before any cleaning can be done. The local police department can cite anyone entering the property for criminal trespass if any work is done without this permit.
After the permit is secured, all remaining furniture, carpet, pad and draperies are removed and discarded in a landfill that accepts contaminated waste. Then all walls, floors, ceilings, cabinets, windows and the heating/cooling system are cleaned and decontaminated.
Once the cleaning is done, the property is tested in each room, with additional sampling of the appliances, the HVAC system and a control sample to show that the process is not contaminated. Once the samples are analyzed and are shown to be less than the standard of 1 microgram per 100 cm2, new carpet can be installed painting or decorating can be done and the home occupied.
